GTO Versus Exploitative Poker
A Game Theory Optimal Strategy Is One No Opponent Can Beat In The Long Run, And An Exploitative Strategy Deliberately Departs From It To Win More Against A Specific Opponent's Mistakes; Strong Players Learn The First As A Baseline And Use The Second In Practice.

What GTO Means
In Game Theory, An Equilibrium Is A Pair Of Strategies Where Neither Player Can Gain By Changing Theirs Alone. In Poker, A Strategy That Belongs To Such An Equilibrium Is Called Game Theory Optimal, Or GTO. In A Two Player Game, Played Perfectly, It Cannot Lose Against Any Opponent Over The Long Run, And At Best An Opponent Breaks Even By Also Playing Optimally. With Three Or More Players That Guarantee No Longer Strictly Holds, Although Equilibrium Strategies Remain Very Hard To Beat.
No One Plays Real Poker Exactly At Equilibrium. The Game Is Far Too Large To Solve Completely, And Solvers Work On Simplified Versions With Limited Bet Sizes. What Players Call GTO In Practice Is The Output Of Those Simplified Models, A Very Strong Approximation Rather Than A Perfect Answer.
What Exploitative Play Means
An Exploitative Strategy Starts From What A Specific Opponent Does Wrong. If A Player Folds Too Often To Three Bets, You Three Bet Them More. If A Player Never Bluffs The River, You Fold Your Bluff Catchers Against Their Bets. Each Adjustment Wins More Than The Equilibrium Strategy Would Against That Opponent.
The Cost Is Exposure. Every Adjustment Moves You Away From The Strategy That Cannot Be Beaten, So An Opponent Who Notices Can Counter It. Against A Player Who Does Not Adjust, That Cost Never Arrives, Which Is Why Exploitative Play Earns Most Of The Money At Most Tables.
How To Use Both
Learn The Baseline First. Knowing Roughly What A Balanced Strategy Does In Common Spots, How Wide To Open, How Often To Defend, How To Size Bets, Tells You What Normal Looks Like. Without That Baseline You Cannot Tell Whether An Opponent Is Making A Mistake Or Simply Playing Well.
Then Deviate For A Reason. Gather Evidence About An Opponent, Form A Clear Read, And Make The Adjustment That Read Calls For. Be Ready To Move Back Toward The Baseline When You Have No Read, Against Strong Players, Or When You Suspect You Are Being Countered.
The Two Approaches Are Not Rivals. Equilibrium Play Protects You When You Know Little, And Exploitative Play Pays You When You Know A Lot. The Skill Is Knowing Which Situation You Are In.
